We are Fornæs

The year is 1992. We find ourselves all the way out on the tip of Djursland. Fornæs' founder, Kresten, sees a new opportunity: He decides to dismantle his own ships at the Grenaa harbor. It makes more sense to do it himself. That way, he can also remove the equipment and sell it. And so begins the story of Fornæs.

It turned out to be a good business. We have dismantled more than 2000 ships and sold even more parts. To this day, you can still find us in and around the Grenaa harbor. We are approximately 20 employees and have a new director at the helm. Together, we collaborate on purchasing, dismantling, and selling.

Our expertise

We primarily consider ourselves a maritime thrift store. Our store is just a bit larger than what you typically associate with a thrift store. We have more than 100,000 square meters here, housing countless maritime parts, both large and small.

Over time, we have worked with ships of all sizes and gained significant expertise in ship dismantling and maritime equipment. We don't like to tread water. That's why we are constantly moving forward, but at a pace that allows us to make the best decisions rather than the easiest ones. It's probably also the reason why we are listed among the EU-approved companies for ship dismantling and have obtained an GMC environmental certificate from Norddjurs Municipality.

We take responsibility

We are conscious of our responsibility, and we always strive to make a positive impact on the world we are a part of. This requires starting with ourselves and, consequently, our employees. We take pride in having a workplace where diversity is welcomed, and there's room to shape one's own daily life.

However, when it comes to safety, there's not much room for compromise. We work with large ships and machinery, leaving nothing to chance. Safety is always a top priority for us. As a new employee at Fornæs, you go through an apprenticeship and shadow colleagues with several years of experience. We believe this gives our employees a much better sense of how to navigate safely in their daily routines.

At first glance, Fornæs may seem like a 'traditional' company. We hear that sometimes, and in some aspects, we are. However, there's nothing old-fashioned about our approach to the environment and green transition. We believe that a circular approach to the use of materials and resources is necessary. This philosophy is reflected in our daily operations and our overall business approach. We focus on optimizing our processes to be environmentally friendly, reselling as many parts as possible, and reusing everything that can be recycled. It's just common sense to us.
